New Blends - Old Blends New Roasts
posted by Rob Weislocher on November 25, 2011
We have been doing some experimenting with different roast levels for some of our favorite origins and blends, and have come up with several new coffees we are excited to feature in our coffeehouse and to sell as part of our bulk bean selections.
One of the first coffees we ever blended twelve years ago was Mudhouse Blend. Over the years, it has been one of our favorite and best selling blends. To achieve it, we blend three amazing beans from South and Central America and roast it to just shy of full city. I have always wanting to take this blend a little darker to achieve a more bold, smoky flavor. This past summer we finally tried it and put a darker roast spin on an old favorite. Mudhouse Blend Bold Roast was born. You will find this coffee to be very much like the Original Roast Mudhouse Blend but rounded out with a nice smoky flavor profile. Not quite a full blown French roast, but definitely more smoky & bold than the original.
We also created a unique blend exclusively for our sister business, MudLounge Coffee & Cocktails, located around the corner of us on Walnut street. For this blend, we take nearly equal parts of one of our favorite African beans and one of our favorite South American beans and roast to a solid full city roast until you just begin to see little droplet of oil on the beans. The African beans lend a slightly wild character to the coffee, while the South American beans offer a solid balance and the full city roast balances it all our with a medium body. We have been brewing this blend at MudLounge for most of the fall and it has started to develop quite the following. So much so, that we have now started to offer it in bulk.
To round out our new offerings, we have a new Brazil Serra Negra French Roast. Brazilian beans are known for their breakfast appeal with a light and lively flavor and marked acidic notes, but roasted to a full French roast these beans take on a smoky more balanced flavor. I think this coffee is ideal for the French roast lover.
We are always playing around with different blends and roast levels. These are some of our favorite new ones. Let us know what you think.
